The short answer
Write one specific thing rather than one large thing. "I want to be happy" is impossible to look back at. "I want Thursday's conversation to go the way I am hoping" is something you can read in a month and know whether it landed.
Specific wishes are better for a reason that has nothing to do with the number: they are the only kind you can check. A wish you can check is a wish you learn something from.
The four kinds people actually write
- The one you are already thinking about. Most wishes are not chosen. Something has been on your mind all morning and the tap gives you a reason to write it down.
- The one you would not say out loud. A private record is the only place some wishes get made at all.
- The small practical one. A test result, a reply you are waiting on, a journey going smoothly. These are the ones people are most surprised to find meaningful later.
- The one for someone else. Wishes made on behalf of other people are the most common category people report writing and the least often talked about.
Prompts for when you draw a blank
Three minutes is not long, and a blank page under time pressure is its own kind of difficult. If nothing comes, answer one of these instead:
- What has been in the back of my mind since I woke up?
- What am I waiting to hear?
- Who needs something I cannot give them?
- What would I want to have written down if today turned out to matter?
- What is the smallest version of the thing I actually want?
Let the number shape the wish
If you follow a particular number, its reading is a useful prompt on its own. 11:11 is usually read as alignment, so it suits a wish about something starting to line up. 222 is read as patience, which suits a wish about something you are waiting on. 555 is read as change, and suits the wish you make in the middle of one.
None of this is prescriptive. It is a way in on the days when the page is blank.
The part most people skip
Read them back. A wish written at 11:11 in March and read in September is the only way to find out whether any of this does anything for you, and it is the part almost everyone skips.
